Better materials start  without PFAS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals known for their persistence in nature and potential health risks. This group includes widely used fluoropolymers such as PVDF, found in everyday technologies like smartphones, electric vehicles, batteries and flexible electronics, materials we rely on daily. As awareness grows, PFAS is now facing increasing regulatory pressure due to its environmental impact.

At Westra, we design all our materials without PFAS, ensuring compliance with current and future regulations. By combining clean chemistry with high performance, we help our partners stay ahead of restrictions and deliver safer, future-proof solutions.

 Why we choose PFAS-free materials

Westra accelerates the electrification of our future using patented, high-performance, sustainable conductive polymers

 Health-conscious

PFAS have been linked to serious health risks, including hormone disruption, immune system effects, and increased cancer risk. By replacing widely used substances like PVDF, we reduce unnecessary exposure and support safer end applications.

 Environmentally sound

PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in nature. Our materials are free from persistent substances, helping reduce long-term environmental impact.

 Regulation-ready

Restrictions on PFAS are expanding across the EU, UK, and globally,  including proposed bans on PVDF. Our formulations are built to meet current and future legislation, no reformulation needed.

 Clean by design

We use safe, well-documented solvents like alcohol, water, or DMSO. By focusing on clean chemistry from the start, we ensure performance without compromise.

Leaving PFAS behind: Smarter chemistry for a cleaner future

What are PFAS?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals used to make materials resistant to water, grease and heat. They’ve been widely used since the 1950s in everything from electronics and industrial coatings to food packaging and medical devices.

The problem? PFAS don’t break down in nature. Instead, they persist and build up in soil, in water, in wildlife, and therefore in the human body. They’re now found in nearly every corner of the planet, from urban rivers to Arctic ice. Studies suggest that up to 99% of the global population have at least one PFAS chemical in their blood.

Why are they being phased out?

Scientific research links PFAS exposure to serious health risks, including hormone disruption, immune suppression, reproductive harm and certain cancers. Even low levels can be harmful over time due to their long-term accumulation.

In response, regulation is accelerating. The EU has proposed a near-total ban on over 10,000 PFAS substances. Similar measures are advancing in the US, UK and beyond. The global shift is clear: PFAS are no longer compatible with responsible product development.

What about PVDF?

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) found in lithium-ion batteries, electronics, membranes and coatings. Its durability and processability has made it a go-to material across industries, but like all PFAS, it is now facing regulatory phase-out.

At Westra we’ve developed materials that match or exceed PVDF performance without any PFAS chemistry. Our polymers are ready to replace PVDF in demanding applications, enabling cleaner, future-proof design without compromise.

Our approach: PFAS-free by design

At Westra, we took a clear stance from day one: we design and manufacture our polymer materials without PFAS.

We use safe, well-documented solvents such as alcohol, water or DMSO ensuring not just compliance, but cleaner chemistry from the ground up. Our materials are engineered for performance, with high electrical conductivity and thermal stability.
